Plum orchards and Serbian oak
The story of Emperus begins with Vasilije Senić, born in 1929 in Viševac, the birthplace of Serbian leader Karađorđe. In 1953 – the year his son Slobodan was born – he planted his first plum orchard with the heritage local varieties Požegača and Rankovača, untreated and farmed entirely organically.
He bought a copper still and introduced an important innovation: removing the stones before fermentation, which significantly improved the quality of the spirit. Ageing took place exclusively in barrels made from centuries-old Serbian mountain oak.
Emperus had the family’s oldest spirits radiocarbon-dated at the Scottish research centre SUERC; they date from between 1935 and 1960 and are offered as “Reliquien des Kaisers”. Today, the range includes brandies made from plum, quince, apple, cherry and grape.
