The story of Stara Pesma begins on the slopes of the Tara mountains in the village of Pepelj, where the family’s ancestors found an ideal climate and planted plum orchards more than two centuries ago. The sunny, airy southern slopes, crossed by mountain streams, have produced high-quality, sugar-rich fruit for over two hundred years.
The old masters distilled Rakija from this fruit, aged it in barrels made from hundred-year-old oak and served it to selected guests. The business is run by the Ilić family, which has lived in Pepelj for centuries.
The distillery includes a “House of Rakija” at Pilica 36 in Bajina Bašta, close to Tara and the Drina: individual and group visits include a tour of the distillery and cellar, an explanation of production and a tasting in an authentic setting.
