Rare grape varieties from Rajac

Vinarija Raj lies in Rajac in Negotinska Krajina in eastern Serbia, close to the famous cellar villages of Rogljevo and Rajac. Its range focuses on distinctive wines: Zenit is made from Semillon, rare in Serbia, and Sova Nova from hand-picked Sauvignon Blanc at full ripeness. Crna Tamjanika, an old variety typical of eastern Serbia, has been grown in the region since the mid-14th

century and was re-established by the winery using seedlings from the agricultural school in Bukovo, then considered the sole custodian of the indigenous variety. Bela Tamjanika is genetically descended from Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains. For Game (Gamay), the winery makes use of the region’s more than 260 days of sunshine: the wine shows more body, greater aromatic intensity and longer ageing potential than is usual in France.

Plot 2020 combines Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from limestone- and clay-rich southern slopes.
