Winemaking at Bukovo Monastery

Bukovo Monastery above Negotin is regarded as a centre of the revival of winegrowing in Negotinska Krajina after the phylloxera crisis of the late 19th century. In 1887, the monastery founded the first viticulture school on its estate, which became the first state specialist school for viticulture and fruit growing four years later.

The brotherhood has planted around two hectares with the rare Muscat variety Crna Tamjanika – a demanding vine cultivated in only a few countries worldwide, producing must with 25 to 32 per cent sugar, and up to 45 per cent in exceptional years. The resulting wines are full-bodied, often semi-sweet, with floral, fruity and spicy notes.

Under the Filigran name, the monastery winery also offers Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Gamay and Crna Tamjanika.
